Division/testability: Traditionally, ASP.NET web applications were difficult to test because ASPX and ASCX controls often end up containing code related to user interface and business logic. In ASP.NET, MVC classes called controllers manage the interaction between the UI and data (model). This separation also makes it much easier to write tests for your application. You can test controller classes directly instead of having to create complex ways of simulating ASP.NET s UI. Flexibility: Because all the layers are decoupled, it should be easy to swap out any individual layer without affecting the others. The ASP.NET MVC framework itself is very flexible and allows customization of many components. Perhaps you want to change your UI/view or use a different database Maintainability: Although ASP.NET MVC is inherently customizable, it enforces a project to be constructed in a specific way and can help keep an application s code tidy. Additionally, because the project structure is relatively rigid, new developers arriving on the team should be able to quickly understand its architecture.

You can run Rootkit Hunter from the command line or via cron. Listing 6-3 shows a sample run of Rootkit Hunter. Listing 6-3. The first option, --cronjob, adjusts the output of Rootkit Hunter to be suitable to run as a cron job. It is usually run in conjunction with the --report-mode option, which cuts down the report to the essentials. The --cronjob option does not actually install the rkhunter as a cron job. You need to add a crontab entry, such as in Listing 6-4, which runs the rkhunter via cron and mails the results of the scan to the user or alias admin once a month at 9 p.m. Listing 6-4. You can use the --nocolors option for those terminals that do not have color support. I discussed --report-mode previously. The next option, --skip-keypress, runs Rootkit Hunter in batch mode and removes prompts for key presses. The last option, --versioncheck, checks the Rootkit Hunter Web site for a new version and reports if there is a new version and its version number. So what does Rootkit Hunter report Well, after some initial self-checks, it checks a list of commonly penetrated binary commands for any sign they have been subverted. Listing 6-5 shows some of the results from this check.

MVC is a lean mean fighting machine; it doesn t contain much ASP.NET functionality. This makes it quick (no parsing or sending of viewstate info) and also means no interference with rendered HTML. This makes MVC a great choice for high-volume web sites or where complete control over rendered HTML is vital.

Then Rootkit Hunter checks for the presence of a variety of root kits and then finally for a number of login back doors, root kit files, and sniffer logs. Check on the screen or the log file if you use the --createlogfile option for any positive results.

Now that you have a database connection, you need to create the EF classes: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Right-click the Models directory and select Add New Item. Select ADO.NET entity data model (under the Data tab) and call the file BobsMovies.edmx. Select Generate from database. Select the connection you created earlier or enter new connection details. Check the Tables box to add all the tables to the application. Set the model namespace as 13.BoxMoviesMVC.Model. Open BobsMovies.designer.cs. By default, Visual Studio will generate a context class with the same name as the example database. Expand the region where it says Contexts and rename the existing context class and its constructors to TheatreEntities.
